These one-of-a-kind bags and pillows are made from recycled huipils (Pronounced wee-peels), the traditional blouse of the Mayan women in Central America. Each is a unique expression of vibrant color that has been hand-woven and embroidered.
Huipils are a great source of pride and creative expression for Mayan women. Every village has its own style and technique that have been passed down for generations, so a huipil reflects the wearer’s home village and also her social status, marital status and beliefs.
When a huipil is no longer wearable it is cut down and remade into bags or pillows.
